# MOTS-c The shelf tag.

This MOTS-c shelf separates the body’s own peptide from manufactured research material. We look at the mouse and cell work, then mark the gap between that work and human outcomes.

What it is

A peptide whose genetic instructions sit within mitochondria.

Research so far

Animal and cell studies; natural-level measurements in people are a different question.

Where it is stocked

Research supply at Oath Research, U.S. only.

### MOTS-c

Research-use material

[View at Oath Research ↗](https://oathresearch.com/product/mots-c/?utm_source=peptidemart&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=mots-c&utm_content=shelf-product)

We recommend [Oath Research](https://oathresearch.com/?utm_source=peptidemart&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=mots-c&utm_content=shelf-reason-1) for this research listing because it publishes batch certificates and offers a refund or replacement for material outside stated specifications. It supplies research material, rather than a personal treatment.

## The unusual address on the label

MOTS-c is a chain of sixteen amino acids. Its genetic instructions are found in mitochondria, the small structures involved in a cell’s energy handling. Most familiar genetic instructions sit elsewhere in the cell. That different address is part of why this peptide attracts research interest.

The body makes its own MOTS-c. Researchers have measured it in blood and muscle, including around exercise. A measurement of a naturally present compound is not an experiment showing what manufactured material does. Those are different shelf tags, however similar the names look.

## Mice, measurements and missing bridges

The [founding MOTS-c paper](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25738459/) examined cultured cells and mice, including metabolic questions under experimental diet conditions. Later [exercise-related research](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33473109/) included mouse performance experiments. We describe these as questions about animal physiology, without recasting them as a route to stamina or weight change in people.

AMPK often appears in the explanation. It is a cell-signalling protein involved in sensing energy availability. A change in this pathway in cells or rodents is a mechanistic finding: a possible account of a process. It is not a demonstrated health outcome in a person.

Human research needs extra sorting. Studies measuring natural MOTS-c show associations, not the effects of supplying it. A separate compound modelled on MOTS-c has also entered human research. An analogue is an altered molecule; its record does not become the record of MOTS-c itself. A registered study without results likewise supplies a plan, not an answer.

## Anecdotal, not clinical evidence

We leave personal performance stories out of this shelf. Training, food, sleep and expectation are difficult to separate in an informal account. Without a controlled comparison and a clear identity for the material, a story cannot tell us which change explains another. It also cannot establish long-term safety.

## Safety still needs its own evidence

MOTS-c has no FDA-approved medical use. FDA’s review identified no human safety studies and substantial gaps in basic animal safety work. Being naturally present does not remove those questions for manufactured research material or establish what happens under different experimental conditions.

On [FDA’s page](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/human-drug-compounding/certain-bulk-drug-substances-use-compounding-may-present-significant-safety-risks) , current as of April 22, 2026, MOTS-c appears as nominated but withdrawn. That does not mean cleared. FDA retains concerns about immune reactions, impurities and peptide characterisation, meaning a sufficiently clear account of what the material is.

## The next useful record

We recommend [Oath Research’s batch records](https://oathresearch.com/lab-results/?utm_source=peptidemart&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=mots-c&utm_content=section-6-1) for readers comparing laboratory supply. The testing-laboratory identity and batch information make a concrete document to inspect. Part of the archive needs an account. Those records describe material, while the unanswered human questions stay unanswered.

## Keep the limits attached.

Cells, animals and people answer different research questions.

## The next counter.

For laboratory supply, we recommend Oath Research for its batch certificates and its remedy for material outside stated specifications. Read the material record alongside the research limits; ordering takes place with the seller.
